NEW DELHI: Pallab Lochan Das of the BJP emerged victorious in the election, securing a total of 84,862 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Jayanta Borah by a decisive margin of 25,770 votes.In Assam’s Biswanath constituency, the electoral contest features BJP candidate Pallab Lochan Das against Congress leader Jayanta Borah.The broader political landscape appears to favour the ruling BJP, with multiple exit polls projecting a comfortable majority for the party-led alliance. This would likely see chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma return to office.Voting across all 126 constituencies was conducted on April 9, recording an impressive turnout of over 85%. Notably, the high participation levels were observed across both rural and urban regions, reflecting strong voter engagement statewide.Biswanath is a general category Assembly constituency. It is currently one of the nine Assembly segments under the Sonitpur Lok Sabha seat. Earlier, it was part of the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency until the 2019 parliamentary elections.In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, the constituency had 1,65,903 registered voters, with 1,40,153 valid votes cast. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Promod Borthakur won the seat with 71,201 votes. Indian National Congress (INC) candidate Anjan Borah came second with 61,991 votes, losing by a margin of 9,210 votes.In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 1,41,223 electors, with 1,22,727 valid votes recorded. BJP’s Promod Borthakur won with 64,225 votes, defeating INC candidate Nurjamal Sarkar, who secured 54,105 votes.During the Lok Sabha elections, the segment has shown a shifting trend over time. In 2009, the Congress led the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) by 4,929 votes.The BJP moved ahead in 2014, leading the Congress by 16,334 votes, and retained the lead in 2019 with a margin of 14,331 votes.The BJP maintained its dominance even after the Biswanath segment became part of the Sonitpur Lok Sabha constituency for the 2024 parliamentary elections, marking five consecutive electoral leads, three in parliamentary polls and two Assembly victories.According to the final electoral roll published on February 10, 2026, the Biswanath Assembly constituency has 1,86,245 voters eligible to vote in the 2026 Assembly elections. This is an increase of 20,502 voters compared to 1,65,743 voters in 2021.
