PM’s close personal friendship with Arab leaders has a little known dimension: his outreach to the crown princes of regional monarchies. That’s an investment in the future, crucial for India’s strategic leverage against Pakistan

The establishment of substantial strategic ties with Gulf states is widely recognised as one of the big successes of Modi govt. Since 2014, Modi has prioritised these ties driven by obvious logic.

This region is the principal source of India’s energy needs; it’s a significant trade and investment partner, and the principal arena for India’s outreach in the frontier areas of food security, pharma, IT, telecommunications and AI. It’s also the locale for India’s logistical outreach through the Arabian Peninsula to the Mediterranean and beyond, and home to a 10-mn strong Indian diaspora.
