Google is building a huge new centre in Vishakhapatnam to work on artificial intelligence (AI) — that’s when computers learn to think and make decisions like humans. It’s going to be Google’s biggest AI data centre outside America and will cost a whopping $15 billion! It’s teaming up with India’s Adani group for this.
This shows how important India has become in the world of technology. People here love using new tech, and even OpenAI’s Sam Altman said that India is the country most excited about AI. But while this is great news, there’s a big question: Who will control AI in India?
If India builds such big AI centres, it can make sure its own data stays safe and can decide how AI should be used here. That’s important because AI could shape the future of how people live, work, and even think. But right now, most Indian companies are just helping big foreign firms with small parts of the work, not building their own AI. That’s a bit worrying.
Interestingly, some economists who just won the Nobel Prize said that new inventions always help economies grow — but only if people guide them wisely. If a few big tech companies like Google or Microsoft control everything, they could decide how much we pay to use AI, who gets access, and even what rules apply.
And there’s another problem — AI isn’t perfect. Sometimes it “hallucinates” (makes up things that aren’t true), and it can ignore safety controls. Yet, people are using AI to build even smarter AIs! So, who makes sure it stays safe for everyone?
The world really needs a set of shared rules to make AI fair and trustworthy — but countries like the US and China barely agree on anything. Until that happens, AI will keep growing fast, and we’ll just have to hope it grows in the right direction — one that helps humans, not harms them.
