The pandemic era changed the sporting world in a drastic manner. From empty arenas to canned noises and artificial echoes added some realism to the games played with no one in attendance. During one of those occasions, NBA legend LeBron James created an unexpected moment that no one saw coming to combat with the eerie silence by trash-talking another player’s family in a playful exchange.
LeBron James trash-talked to the Spurs players’ family in a game during the COVID era
At the height of the COVID-19 era, only a few family members and friends were allowed to attend NBA matches. During a match between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, LeBron James playfully mocked and trash-talked Spurs player Dejounte Murray’s family, who had come to see the game.Alex Welsh, along with fellow host and Celtics guard Derrick White, revealed this on the recent edition of his White Noise podcast. He said, “There weren’t more than 40 people, maybe. Just friends and family. They sat us on the other side of the benches. Obviously close to [the] floor, but there was still like a huge gap to the floor, obviously… They scattered every family.” Welsh stated that King James would look at Murray’s family and score or run up to the sidelines, in a playful jab. “Dejounte Murray’s family was four rows up, and five rows over from our section, and it was dead silent… He [LeBron] was like, looking in their direction, and he would score, run up the sidelines, right in front of us. And he was like looking in their direction, like, kinda chirping back and forth with them,” said Welsh.
Despite an odd side of LeBron being on display during that game, Welsh made it clear that it was all in good fun. He has been known to share a great relationship with Dejounte and the entire Murray family. Moreover, it gave a rare insight to the fans who had always seen The King take jabs at his opponents rather than their families during the court games.
