Pune: Hundreds of final-year BCom students of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) were flabbergasted on Thursday after their online mark sheets showed them as ‘failed’ despite securing good grades in all the subjects. The discrepancy was rectified later the same day after students brought the issue to the notice of the university’s examination department.Just after the third-year BCom results were released on Thursday, many students who downloaded their mark sheets, found that they had received ‘A’, ‘B+’ and ‘B’ grades in individual subjects, but the final result column displayed “Fail”, causing confusion about their academic status. The error drew concern and anxiety among students. Many were worried about admissions to postgraduate courses and job applications. Parents also contacted colleges and the university seeking clarification.“The mark sheet showed good grades in every subject, but the overall result mentioned ‘fail’. It was a stressful experience until the university corrected it,” said a parent.Rajendra Talware, director of SPPU’s Board of Examinations and Evaluation, said the issue occurred because grades for add-on courses were not reflected in the mark sheets of some students. “The discrepancy was identified after students reported it. The results were corrected, and updated mark sheets were made available to the affected students on Thursday night,” he said.Students said the prompt correction brought relief, but added that such technical errors should be avoided as they create unnecessary panic at a crucial stage of their academic careers.Aditi Kulkarni, a final-year BCom student, said, “When I first saw ‘fail’ on my mark sheet, I was completely shocked because my subject-wise grades were all good. I was worried about my postgraduate admission. It was a huge relief after the university corrected the result.”Another student, Rohan Patil, a final-year BCom said, “For a few hours, we did not know whether the mark sheet was correct or not. Many of us started calling our colleges and classmates. The error was rectified quickly, but such glitches create unnecessary stress for students.”The BCom final-year examinations were conducted in April, while the results were declared in the last week of June.
