Filmmaker Anik Dutta, 66, passed away on Wednesday, reportedly by suicide. According to Kolkata Police, he was rushed to a private hospital in Dhakuria after falling from the terrace of his wife’s flat in a multi-storeyed residential building in Hindustan Park. Police said neither family members nor domestic help noticed his entry into the building; only security personnel were aware of his presence. Dutta was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. His body was later sent to SSKM Hospital for postmortem. Police sources said a purported suicide note was recovered from the terrace; it does not hold anyone responsible. The document has been sent for forensic examination, and the homicide department is assisting the investigation to establish the sequence of events.As per media reports, preliminary postmortem findings indicate death due to massive internal and external bleeding with severe head trauma, consistent with a high-impact fall. The autopsy, conducted on Wednesday evening, noted extensive head and brain injuries, including multiple skull fractures, epidural hematoma and intracranial hemorrhage. Several ribs were fractured, with blood accumulation in the chest cavity, and vital organs including the lungs and liver were ruptured. Injuries to the lower body included fractures to the left leg and hip, along with severe damage to the left waist. External injuries included deep wounds to the head and neck and extensive abrasion marks.Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, with police examining forensic evidence and witness statements to determine the exact circumstances.Dutta rose to fame with the 2012 satirical horror-comedy Bhooter Bhabishyat, and went on to direct Aparajito, Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo and Borunbabur Bondhu. His last film was Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025).
