Nagpur: A 73-year-old housewife was allegedly duped of ₹4.5 lakh by cyber fraudsters posing as officials conducting a voter ID verification exercise and offering assistance with voter ID renewal and name correction.The fraud came to light after Saroj Joshi lodged a complaint with Dhantoli police. Joshi, who has no regular source of income, was targeted between July 14 and July 30 this year.According to the complaint, the accused contacted her through WhatsApp and claimed they would help renew her voter ID card and correct her name. The fraudsters also made calls from a mobile number while posing as Election Commission officials and sent her a fraudulent link.Although Joshi did not share any OTP, an amount of ₹4.5 lakh was unauthorisedly transferred from her bank account to another account on July 20, police said.Based on her complaint, Dhantoli police registered a case against unidentified persons under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 66(5) of the Information Technology Act. Further investigation is underway.Police have urged citizens, particularly senior citizens, to remain vigilant against phishing attempts made under the guise of official procedures. They advised the public not to click on suspicious links or share banking details over phone calls or messages. Officials said preventive measures under the Information Technology Act are being strengthened to curb the rising incidence of cyber fraud in Nagpur.
