It is an entirely rural constituency covering Harishchandrapur II community development block and parts of Harishchandrapur I block. The seat has a predominantly Muslim electorate and has shown strong loyalty to parties that can secure that community’s vote. Congress held the seat for several terms before losing ground to TMC.In 2016, the seat was held by a Congress-aligned candidate; however, by 2021, TMC’s Tajmul Hossain won decisively with around 60 per cent of the vote, defeating BJP’s Md. Matiur Rahaman and the Congress candidate Mustaq Alam. Tajmul Hossain served as a Minister of State in the Mamata Banerjee cabinet. For 2026, TMC has fielded a new candidate in Md. Matebur Rahman, suggesting a change in the party’s local representative. BJP’s Ratan Das and Congress’s Mostaque Alam will attempt to chip away at TMC’s considerable majority in what is a predominantly pro-TMC constituency.
