NEW DELHI: After a long gap, the opposition alliance INDIA will meet on June 6 to take stock of the political situation in the country.Sources said “opposition politics – the way forward” will be the theme of the meeting. There has been a growing feeling among opposition parties that the governing BJP is gaining ground owing to a lack of cohesion among rivals. Also, there has been considerable weakening of regional parties lately. The meeting may be dominated by opposition about the SIR of the electoral rolls. After the recent assembly election results, Congress neta Rahul Gandhi had said the country needed to be alert about the way elections were being conducted and pointed to West Bengal as an election “stolen” by BJP. The Mamata Banerjee-headed TMC was unseated from office in the state. Since then, Banerjee has been seeking a meeting of the opposition parties. While TMC has often struck an independent line, it has opted for a reconciliatory tone since the poll results. Gandhi too said that it was time to forget the differences and work to “save the democracy”. DMK’s joining the meeting will be interesting. While it has been a key member of the bloc, Congress snapped ties with the party and joined hands with Vijay’s TVK that came to office in Tamil Nadu.CPM too recently lost office in Kerala to Congress and has since been attacking Congress.
