Bhubaneswar: Nearly two years after a pharmacist and his two female friends allegedly killed his wife by administering an overdose of anesthesia in Bhubaneswar’s Bharatpur area, the second additional sessions judge, Bandana Kar, on Thursday sentenced two of them to life imprisonment, while acquitting the third.The convicts were identified as Pradyuma Kumar (26) and his associate Rosy Patra (21). The court exonerated Ejita Bhuyan (24) of all charges.Additional public prosecutor Sai Ranjan Mahanandia said, “We placed the evidence meticulously before the court. The judge found sufficient proof against Kumar and Patra, sentencing both to life imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 each.”Kumar, Patra and Bhuyan were arrested by Bharatpur police on Oct 30, 2024, two days after the alleged murder of Subhashree Nayak (26). Kumar was then working as a pharmacist, while Patra and Bhuyan were paramedics at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.Investigators said Kumar, a native of Kendrapada, was allegedly involved in extramarital affairs with both Patra and Bhuyan and conspired to eliminate his wife. Kumar had married Subhashree in 2020, but marital discord soon surfaced, forcing her to live mostly at her parental home in BJB Nagar.On Oct 28, 2024, Kumar reportedly lured Subhashree to Patra’s residence, where she was overpowered and administered an overdose of anesthesia. The trio later took her to Capital Hospital, claiming she had attempted suicide.Police suspected foul play and the post‑mortem confirmed death due to anesthetic overdose. “Kumar had pharmacological knowledge and knew how a drug overdose could be fatal. Patra allegedly stole the anesthetic injection from her workplace,” a senior police officer said.
