As NHL rumors are circulating during this offseason, several reports are suggesting that the Philadelphia Flyers may have set their sights on one of the NHL‘s biggest superstars, and general manager Daniel Briere is potentially positioning the franchise to pursue either Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews in the future. The speculation comes after the Philadelphia Flyers made an aggressive attempt to acquire Leo Carlson this offseason, submitting a five-year, $90 million offer sheet to the Anaheim Ducks. However, the Ducks ultimately matched the offer to retain their star player. Though the Flyers missed out on Carlson, their pursuit demonstrated their willingness to make a major investment, which is why one NHL reporter recently raised the possibility of pursuing Connor McDavid, discussing Philadelphia’s plans and available assets.
Could the Philadelphia Flyers aim to acquire a major NHL superstar like Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews in the future?
As the Philadelphia Flyers are busy trading for and have recently retained players like Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, and Dan Vladar this offseason, Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco believes that GM Brier is almost done making significant additions to their roster and is likely to feel comfortable with the current roster for the upcoming season. When he was asked whether the team could target top NHL stars like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews in the near future, Di Marco stated that it depends entirely on the Flyers’ availability of funds and cap space.Speaking to Daily Faceoff, NHL writer Di Marco added, “As for patience, that is play for the Flyers right now. If a McDavid or an Auston Matthews comes to be available, the Flyers need to be prepared. They are currently sitting with a little less than $15 million of cap space – something they need to maintain if they want to be in on the next superstar that comes available.” Landing potential players like Connor McDavid or Auston Matthews could happen because the star players of the league will turn into Unrestricted Free Agents within the next 2 years. The two superstars could become available in the summer of 2027 if they do not commit their futures to their current clubs.In fact, Connor McDavid’s name has already been linked with the Flyers. According to former forward Todd Fedoruk, McDavid can join the Flyers in the near future. “[McDavid] is going to be a player who will be calling teams. His agent is going to be looking for him to go places. There are rumors that Philadelphia is a place that Connor McDavid wants to go,” Fedoruk stated.And, regarding Matthews, initially there was trade speculation going around Auston Matthews, and he has previously been the subject of trade speculation. This could be a possibility for the Flyers to trade for Matthews in the near future if the Maple Leafs do not retain the player. As per reports, Connor McDavid currently earns an AAV of $12.5 million, while Auston Matthews stayed back with the Leafs, and has an AAV of $13.2 million.However, neither player appears to be an immediate target for the Philadelphia Flyers in the present situation, and as the Flyers are likely comfortable with their current roster, they would certainly wait for the right opportunity to emerge despite discussion among NHL analysts and experts.
