Iran has become the most vexing and revelatory of Trump’s foreign policy forays. It displays all the potential advantages of his style, and confirms all the weaknesses of the same. His ability to make quick decisions, and dispense with conventional wisdom, could lead to diplomatic breakthroughs – but the fact that his state department hasn’t really recovered from his first presidency, and the personalistic style of reaching decisions, mean that institutional backing for statecraft has been rendered rather useless.
