In such a scenario, it is natural to ask: what should be the role of Gen-Z towards the nation and society in the present times?

This question arises because, during the recent protests against the NEET paper leak, the same Gen-Z appeared to become a tool in the hands of certain political parties. In a democratic system, everyone has the right to oppose any incident, express their views, and hold peaceful demonstrations. However, hurling abusive insults at the Prime Minister of the country and displaying obscene gestures is merely a reflection of a lack of values. Did the young people who indulged in such acts even think once about how embarrassed their parents or elderly family members would feel when they saw them saying and doing such things on television? Why is Gen-Z forgetting that it is they who have to carry forward the dream of Viksit Bharat? Their role in establishing India on the global stage should be that of leaders.

During this unprecedented period of development, the nation and society are waiting for the constructive and positive role of the youth. Today, the majority of young people, instead of depending only on traditional jobs, believe in taking risks and embracing innovation. The way Agritech, Edtech, and Fintech startups are emerging from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities of Uttar Pradesh and across the country, Gen-Z has a central role in this transformation. The technical proficiency of young people can prove to be a boon in giving digital identity to schemes such as Uttar Pradesh’s One District One Product (ODOP) and connecting local artisans with global markets. Rather than using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology merely as a means of entertainment, it would be better to use them to make farming, healthcare services, and education more accessible.

Economic progress remains incomplete unless it is environmentally sustainable. Gen-Z is regarded as a climate-conscious generation. If nature is left behind in the race for development, such progress cannot be sustainable. It is the responsibility of Gen-Z to adopt a sustainable and environment-friendly lifestyle. Boycotting single-use plastic, ensuring proper disposal of e-waste, spreading awareness about renewable energy (solar and wind power), and choosing businesses and lifestyles that help reduce the carbon footprint are all areas where the effective participation of young people can transform the picture.

Gen-Z is a digital native, meaning it is the first generation to have an unlimited repository of information available at its fingertips. However, with this digital power comes great responsibility. Through fact-checking, the spread of fake news and hate speech can be curbed to a large extent. Avoid sharing any sensitive news on social media without proper verification, and make the digital space safe and positive. Create positive content that promotes social harmony and goodwill. Instead of trolling or spreading hatred on the internet, respect the mental well-being of others and appreciate diversity.

A nation is built not only by governments but also by responsible citizens. Gen-Z must remain equally conscious of its Fundamental Duties along with its rights. Protect public property, lead cleanliness campaigns, and strictly follow traffic rules. Reject discrimination based on caste, religion, and gender, and contribute to building an inclusive society. Instead of engaging only in online debates, participate in voting with complete commitment, and raise logical voices for policy reforms in governance rather than resorting to violent protests. These are the responsibilities expected of Gen-Z. It is nothing new for young people to display a rebellious spirit, but care must be taken to ensure that this indomitable energy is not misdirected and that a handful of political parties do not exploit it for their vested interests.

In the race for development, there is often a concern that young people may become disconnected from their cultural roots. India’s real strength lies in the unique blend of its ancient heritage and modern outlook. It is Gen-Z that can present Uttar Pradesh’s rich cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage, such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, and Sarnath to the world through a modern perspective. Presenting the true image of the country on the global stage through blogging, digital storytelling, and cultural tourism is also an important responsibility of the youth.

The pace at which Uttar Pradesh and India are advancing economically, industrially, and technologically today is unprecedented. In this golden era, Gen-Z must not remain anyone’s puppet or merely a consumer. Instead of becoming problem seekers, they must become problem solvers. When this remarkable combination of energy, technology, sensitivity, and patriotism works in one direction, nothing can stop India from becoming the world’s greatest economic and cultural superpower. This positive role of Gen-Z will prove to be the strongest foundation of a Swarnim Viksit Bharat.
