Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation has intensified its enforcement drive against commercial establishments in Upper Bazaar that are operating without approved building plans and lack adequate parking facilities. The crackdown by the civic body has triggered strong opposition from the business community, with the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) voicing severe objections.FJCCI in a statement on Monday said, “Harassment of local merchants would not be tolerated. If the RMC adopts a policy of shutting down businesses instead of resolving traders’ issues, the entire trading community will stand united in strong opposition. The administration must remember that traders are not criminals but the backbone of the city’s economy. We will firmly oppose any unjust, biased, or arbitrary action and, if necessary, launch a massive public movement.”More than 50 commercial outlets in the area, functioning under trade licences obtained through Occupier or Super Structure Holding but without approved building plans and with a lack of adequate parking arrangements, have been served notices for licence revocation. These non-compliant establishments cause persistent traffic congestion and significant daily inconvenience to commuters and local visitors.The drive aims to streamline traffic flow in the area and enforce strict compliance with building construction and operational regulations.Municipal commissioner Sushant Gaurav said, “Upper Bazaar represents the commercial identity of Ranchi. A comprehensive action plan is being formulated to transform the area into an organised, safe, and modern market area while providing improved infrastructure and amenities for traders, residents, and shoppers alike.”Notices are being issued by the agency authorised for RMC tax collection and direct traders to shut operations within three days. It also warns of legal action, including the sealing of premises, in case of non-compliance.Notices have also been issued to about half a dozen shops near Upper Bazaar’s Shani Mandir for continuing to operate illegally despite their allotments being cancelled long ago.The civic body reaffirmed that the drive will continue to ensure smooth traffic flow, safeguard civic amenities, and enforce business operations according to regulations.
